How To Dispute
Common Errors
Disputing is easy. Once you order
your free credit report, you'll see a
confirmation number at the top. You'll
have a separate number for each of
the three bureaus. (Sample Credit
Report)

You'll can either call each bureau
directly (have your confirmation #) or
go to the disputing section online.

All of your negative accounts will be
listed. You'll be given various options
as to why you claim the debt is
inaccurate, such as "belongs to ex-
spouse, no knowledge of account,
balance is incorrect, etc.).

Each bureau sends your dispute to
the collection agency or company.

If they don't respond within 30 days
(they often don't), the item is
automatically removed. If they do
respond and claim it is valid, you can
dispute again.

If you have proof, mail your
documents to the addresses listed
below. (Sample Dispute Letter)
Duplicate listings: Collection agencies
sometimes purchase your old bills from
each other without informing the
bureaus that they no longer deal with
your account. A bill in the same amount
might appear 3 times.

Paid collections may still appear unpaid.
A collection agency failed to notify your
original creditor that you paid them.

Negative information 7 years old still
appears. (Bankruptcy, liens and
judgements may remain up to 10 years.
Anything else should be deleted. See
the statute of limitations for debt
collection.

Each bureau may have different
information about you, resulting in
different scores. Mortgage lenders will
usually average the three scores.

Try to report all errors at once.
Investigations take approximately 30
days. TransUnion may take 45. If you
find additional errors later, it will delay
your results.

Your report updates only after all
disputes are resolved. If an item is
deleted a week after you file a dispute,
it won't appear on your report until the
investigation is over.

Freecreditreport.com lets you view your
reports & scores daily from all three
bureaus. You can check your own score
online every day. Points will not be
deducted from your scores when
checking your own credit files.
